  몇 주 전, 달라스의 교회에서 오랫동안 함께 믿음의 교제를 나누던 권사님 가정에 천국 환송 예배가 있었습니다. 이 부부는 50년간 함께하며, 40여 년 전 미국으로 이민 와 어려운 환경 속에서도 남매를 잘 키워내셨습니다. 남편 권사님은 아내 권사님을 극진히 사랑하고 보살피셨으며, 어디든지 항상 함께 다니셨던 분입니다. 따님의 조사에서는 어머니가 한국의 어머니로서 모든 것을 아낌없이 해주시고 희생하셨다는 내용을 담담히 나눠주셨습니다.

  그런데 그 환송 예배에는 특별한 점이 있었습니다. 바로 장례 예식에 시신이 없었다는 것입니다. 나중에 알게 된 사실은, 권사님께서 자신의 시신을 병원에 의료 연구용으로 기증하셨다는 것이었습니다. 평생 자녀를 위해, 남편을 위해, 그리고 교회의 성도들을 위해 섬기셨던 권사님은, 마지막까지 자신을 태워 어둠을 밝히는 초처럼 모든 것을 내어주셨습니다. 그래서 우리는 시신 없이 환송 예배를 드려야 했습니다. 모든 것을 나눈다는 것이 말은 쉬워도, 시신을 기증한다는 결정은 결코 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 권사님은 마지막까지 이 땅에서 할 수 있는 모든 것을 아낌없이 나누고 떠나셨습니다.

오늘은 마더스 데이입니다. 또한 졸업 예배와 파송 예배를 함께 드리는 날이기도 합니다.

우리 교회는 한국의 어머니 같은 교회입니다. 많은 이들을 아낌없이 사랑하고 품어주는 따뜻한 공동체이기 때문입니다.

졸업과 파송 예배는 고등학생들과 대학생들이 웨이코 주님의 교회에서 믿음이 자라나, 이제 다음 단계로 나아가기 위해 새롭게 출발하는 날입니다. 특히 대학생 및 대학원생들은 베일러 대학교에서 공부하기 위해 웨이코를 찾았고, 주님의 교회에서 많은 성도들의 사랑과 섬김을 받으며 지내왔기에 부모님을 떠난 타지 생활을 잘 마무리할 수 있었습니다. 이번에는 고등학생 3명과 베일러 대학교 학생 5명이 졸업하며, 이 중 4명의 학생은 교회를 떠나게 됩니다.

사실 베일러 학생들이 교회를 떠난다는 것은 교회의 한 부분이 떠나는 것과 같습니다. 예배 공동체로서는 어쩌면 손해처럼 느껴질 수도 있습니다. 그동안 사랑을 가득 담아 섬겼던 이들이 떠나기에 큰 아쉬움이 남을 수 있습니다.

그러나 하나님 나라에서는 우리의 수고가 결코 헛되지 않음을 믿습니다. 예수님께서 우리를 위해 모든 것을 아낌없이 내어주셨던 것처럼, 하나님 나라의 백성들을 섬기고 그리스도의 제자로 양육한 일이야말로 하나님 나라의 확장에 큰 유익이며 열매임을 믿습니다.

지금까지 학생들을 위해 섬겨주신 모든 성도님들께 감사드립니다. 앞으로도 우리 교회를 방문하는 학생들과 성도들에게 지금까지 해오신 것처럼 아낌없이, 최선을 다해 그리스도의 사랑으로 섬겨주시기를 부탁드립니다.

우리는 비록 뿌리고 섬겼지만 열매를 직접 보지 못할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리의 아낌없는 섬김을 통해 하나님의 나라는 전 세계와 열방 가운데 확장될 줄 믿습니다. 그리고 하나님께서는 수고하고 애쓴 모든 성도들을 향해 이렇게 칭찬하실 줄 믿습니다.

“그의 주인이 그에게 말하였다. '잘했다! 착하고 신실한 종아. 네가 적은 일에 신실하였으니, 이제 내가 많은 일을 네게 맡기겠다. 와서, 주인과 함께 기쁨을 누려라.” (마태복음 25:21)

그동안 수고하신 모든 성도님들께 하나님의 위로와 복이 충만히 임하시기를 바랍니다.

A few weeks ago, our church in Dallas held a heaven-bound farewell service for a beloved deaconess who had long shared deep fellowship with us in faith. She and her husband had been married for 50 years and immigrated to the U.S. over 40 years ago. Despite many hardships, they faithfully raised their son and daughter. The deacon, her husband, dearly loved and cared for his wife. They were always seen together, wherever they went. In her daughter’s tribute, she quietly shared how her mother had given everything for her, as a sacrificial and devoted Korean mother.

However, there was something unusual about the farewell service: the absence of a body. Later, we learned that she had donated her body for medical research. This deaconess, who had lived a life of service to her children, her husband, and the members of the church, had chosen to give of herself even in death—like a candle that burns itself to bring light. Because of her selfless decision, we held her farewell service without her body.

It is easy to say we want to give everything, but donating one's body is no easy decision. And yet, she gave her all, without holding anything back, until the very end of her earthly life.

Today is Mother’s Day. It is also the day we celebrate both our graduation and commissioning service.

Our church is like a Korean mother—one that loves sacrificially and embraces others without hesitation. It is a warm and generous community of love.

This graduation and commissioning service marks a new beginning for our high school and college students, who have grown in their faith while attending Waco Lord’s Church. Especially for our college and graduate students who came to Waco to study at Baylor University, this church has been a spiritual family—a place where they received love and support while living away from their parents.

This year, three high school students and five Baylor students are graduating. Four of them will be leaving our church community.

When Baylor students leave, it feels like a part of our church leaves with them. From a worship community standpoint, it may feel like a loss. We’ve poured out so much love, only to send them off. It’s natural to feel a sense of sadness.

Yet in the kingdom of God, we believe that our labor is never in vain. Just as Jesus gave everything for us without reservation, we believe that serving the people of God and raising them as disciples of Christ brings great benefit and fruit for the kingdom of God.

Thank you to all who have served and cared for our students. We ask that you continue to serve future students and members who come through our church with the same love and wholeheartedness you've shown so far.

Though we may not always see the fruit of our labor, we trust that through our selfless service, God's kingdom will be expanded across the world and to the nations. And we believe that God will commend all who have served faithfully with these words:

“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness.” (Matthew 25:21)

May all who have served faithfully experience the comfort and abundant blessings of God.
